      Why Are My Gums Bleeding?

Healthy gums are the foundation of a bright smile. But what happens when your gums start bleeding? While occasional bleeding after brushing too hard isn't necessarily a cause for alarm, persistent bleeding can indicate underlying gum disease.

Here at The Dome MedDental Clinic, we prioritize your oral health. Let's explore some reasons why your gums might be bleeding.

Gingivitis - The Early Stage of Gum Disease

The most common cause of bleeding gums is gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease. This occurs when plaque, a sticky film containing bacteria, builds up on the teeth and gums. If not removed through regular brushing and flossing and routine scale and polish appointments, plaque can irritate the gums, causing inflammation and bleeding.

      Brushing Too Hard

While thorough brushing is essential for good oral hygiene, aggressive brushing can damage the gum tissue, leading to minor bleeding. We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle brushing techniques.

      Hormonal Changes

Fluctuations in hormone levels in women, especially during pregnancy, puberty, or menstrual period can make gums more sensitive and prone to bleeding, making women more vulnerable to gum disease. According to the American Dental Association, a surge in female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) causes increased blood flow to the gums, making them more reactive to irritants.

      Certain Medications

Some medications, such as blood thinners, can also be a contributing factor to gum bleeding. Consult your physician if you suspect your medication might be the cause.
