Alleviate Pain and
Discomfort.
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, often referred to as TMD, can cause significant pain and discomfort in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. This complex condition can affect your ability to eat, speak, yawn, and even sleep soundly.
Fortunately, here at The Dome MedDental Clinic, our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Dr. Philippe Chanavaz and Pr. Pierre Bouletreau offer a variety of treatment options to alleviate pain, improve function, and enhance your quality of life.
What is TMJ?
The TMJ is a hinge joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. This joint needs some fluid to facilitate the hinging movement of both jaws so that they can function as a well-oiled machine. There are two of these joints on either side of the jaw and they are made up of muscles, bones, and nerves.
When this complex system of muscles, bones, nerves, and fluid is disrupted, it can lead to chronic pain and dysfunction, not only in the jaw but also radiating to the ears, cheeks, head, neck, and shoulders.

Causes of TMJ Disorder
Injury
Trauma to the jaw, such as a dislocation or fracture, can damage the joint and surrounding tissues.
Bruxism
Teeth grinding or clenching, often due to stress, puts excessive pressure on the TMJ.
Arthritis
Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis can affect the TMJ.
Malocclusion
Misalignment of the teeth or bite problems can strain the jaw joint.
Muscle Issues
Tight or inflamed jaw muscles can contribute to TMJ pain and dysfunction.
Other Factors
Certain dental procedures, impacted wisdom teeth, and even stress can trigger or exacerbate TMD.
Treatment Options for TMJ
Our dental experts at The Dome MedDental Clinic will personalize
your treatment plan based on your specific diagnosis and needs.
This may include:
Medications
Short-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) to manage pain and inflammation. Muscle relaxants may also be prescribed for muscle tension.
Oral Appliances
Custom-fitted bite plates or splints can help reposition the jaw, reduce muscle strain, and protect teeth from grinding.
Physical Therapy
Specific exercises and stretches can improve jaw mobility and strengthen muscles.
Stress Management
Techniques like counseling or relaxation exercises can help manage stress, a common trigger for TMD.
Oral Surgery
In severe cases where non-surgical treatments are not effective, replacement surgery for the jaw joint becomes necessary.
Orthodontic Treatment
In some cases, braces may be recommended to correct bite problems and relieve pressure on the TMJ.
