Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects millions of adults worldwide. While early stages of gum disease, called gingivitis, can sometimes be managed at home, more advanced stages require professional dental intervention.
Understanding Gum Disease
Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque, a sticky film harboring bacteria. Poor oral hygiene allows plaque to build up, causing gums to recede and create spaces for bacteria to thrive. Left untreated, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), which irritates and inflames the gums. As gum disease progresses, it can damage the bone supporting your teeth, leading to tooth loss.
Stages of Gum Disease
When is Home Care Not Enough?
While diligent oral hygiene is essential for preventing gum disease, advanced stages necessitate professional intervention. Periodontal disease, a more severe form of gum disease, requires treatment from a periodontist, a dentist specializing in gum disease treatment.
Scaling and root planing, or deep cleaning, is often the first line of defense. In more severe cases, surgical procedures may be required. Simply put, you can not treat or manage the more advanced form of gum disease on your own. Periodontitis cannot be managed by brushing alone, over-the-counter medications, or home remedies.
