Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common yet serious sleep disorder affecting millions worldwide. It's characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, which can last from a few seconds to minutes and occur frequently throughout the hour. These pauses may resume with normal breathing or a choking sound/loud snoring. This disruption in sleep leads to fragmented rest and a host of potential health issues, as the body and brain aren't getting enough oxygen.
If you're struggling with loud snoring, daytime fatigue, or other symptoms of OSA, The Dome MedDental Clinic in Dubai offers expert diagnosis and effective treatment options to help you reclaim restful sleep and improve your overall well-being.
OSA occurs when the muscles in the back of your throat relax and collapse, obstructing your airway and causing breathing to repeatedly stop and start. This disrupts your sleep cycle and can lead to serious health problems if left untreated, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
The following factors can increase your risk of developing OSA:
Diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) involves a comprehensive approach that considers your physical examination findings, family history, and reported symptoms. At The Dome MedDental Clinic, our experienced Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons collaborate with specialized sleep doctors and ENT specialists to accurately assess your condition. This multidisciplinary team works together to ensure a thorough evaluation, which may include a sleep study and other diagnostic tests, to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your individual needs.
We offer a variety of treatment options tailored to your specific needs, including:
Treating OSA through surgery has proven effective in over 90% of cases. The surgical procedure widens the airway by repositioning the jaws or removing/stiffening excess throat tissue.
Performed under general anesthesia to minimize pain, the surgery requires 1-3 days of hospitalization, depending on the procedure, followed by 2 weeks to a month of recovery at home. Despite being a surgical intervention, scars are not visible as the procedure is performed inside the mouth, and incisions are closed with self-absorbing sutures.
Titanium plates are placed after jaw repositioning to stabilize the bones in their new positions. These plates are generally well-tolerated but can be removed after six months if they cause irritation. Otherwise, they can remain in place.
The Dome MedDental Clinic is proud to have two of the world's leading Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons specializing in sleep apnea treatment: Dr. Pierre Bouletreau and Dr. Philippe Chanavaz.
