      What is the link between alcohol consumption and poor oral health?

      A 2015 study published in the Journal of Periodontology demonstrated the negative effects of alcohol on gum health. The study found that regular alcohol users were more likely to experience gum bleeding, plaque buildup, and deeper gum pockets compared to non-drinkers.

      People with alcohol dependence are at a particularly high risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Heavy drinkers are three times more likely to experience permanent tooth loss due to these conditions.

      • Limit alcohol consumption: If you do drink alcohol, try to limit it to moderate amounts.
      • Practice good oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and use a mouthwash.
